Summer Financial Aid Application Process
Summer application deadline: June 1, 2012
Application deadline for Federal Work-Study: April 1, 2012
To be eligible for summer 2012 financial aid at the University of Utah:
- Complete the 2011-2012 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), our school code is 003675.
- Complete the 2011-2012 UFORM.
- Submit the summer application by June 1, 2012. Current Federal Work-Study (FWS) students, who would like to continue working in May and June, should submit the summer application before the deadline of April 1, 2012. If an award increase is needed, please attach the FWS Request Form to the summer application (email the Federal Work Study Coordinator to obtain the request form). Law students will need to submit the Summer Law Course Addendum.
- Register for at least half-time enrollment (Undergraduates: 6 credits; Graduates: 5 credits) if seeking loans and/or work-study. Please be aware that additional qualifications may be required for Federal Pell Grant recipients.

How much can I receive in financial aid?
Students may receive up to their cost of attendance if enough Pell Grant and/or Direct Stafford Loan eligibility remains from the 2011-2012 academic year. Graduate and Parent PLUS borrowers may request up to their eligibility in PLUS loans.

When will I receive my financial aid funds?
Students with completed files can expect to have their financial aid applied to their tuition account within the first weeks of summer semester. Incomplete summer applications or missing documentation will delay disbursement of funds.

What types of awards are available in the summer?
Federal Pell Grant, TEACH Grant, Direct Stafford/PLUS Loans, and Federal Work-Study are available for summer semester depending on eligibility. Campus based awards such as SEOG, HESSP, UEF, NBTAG, Nursing Loans and Perkins Loans are not available.

Will my Pell Grant be available in the summer?
- The Federal Pell Grant is available to first bachelor's degree students with an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) between 0 and 5273.
- Students who have not received 100% of their Pell Grant may have eligibility remaining from their original scheduled award. The Federal Pell Grant is prorated based on enrollment as of the last day to add classes and Expected Family Contribution (EFC) listed on the FAFSA application.

Can I receive Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans?
Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans (DL) may be available to students who have not exhausted the established yearly loan limits. Students interested in Stafford loans MUST submit an Additional Stafford 2011-2012 Loan Request Form (PDF) along with the summer application.

How much can be borrowed in a Graduate or Parent PLUS Loan?
There is no limit for the amount a graduate student or parent can borrow in Graduate/Parent PLUS loan as long as it does not exceed the cost of attendance. Students interested in Grad or Parent PLUS loans MUST submit a Graduate PLUS 2011-2012 Loan Request Form (PDF) or a Parent PLUS 2011-2012 Loan Request Form (PDF) along with the summer application.

Can I use my Federal Work-Study during summer?
Students who have already been granted Federal Work-Study (FWS) and who enroll during summer at least half time (Undergraduates: 6 credits; Graduates: 5 credits) may work during May and June.
Transfer students:
A Federal Work-Study award is not transferable from your previous institution. Contact the FWS Coordinator if you have questions.

I am going on a Study Abroad this summer; do I need to complete the summer application?
Yes, you need to complete the summer application before you leave the country. NOTE: ALL students attending a Study Abroad MUST meet with a financial aid counselor for additional guidance.

I am a new student/transfer student, how do I access my awards?

New Students: Once your file is complete (i.e. FAFSA on file, UFORM, verification documents if applicable, and summer application) and you have been awarded, you will be able to access your awards through your Campus Information Systems, under Financial Aid click on “Award Letter” where you can accept, reduce, or decline your awards. If you decide to accept the loans, you must complete the Master Promissory Note and Entrance Counseling at www.studentloans.gov. Make sure to review your financial aid status and UMail account on a regular basis for incomplete checklists.

Transfer students: Similar to New Students, once your file is complete (i.e. FAFSA on file, UFORM, verification documents if applicable, and summer application) and you have been awarded, you will be able to access your awards through Campus Information Systems. Under the Financial Aid link, click on "Award Letter" where you can accept, reduce, or decline your awards. If you accepted part of your loan awards at your previous institution, you are not required to complete another Master Promissory Note. However, you must complete the Entrance Counseling at www.studentloans.gov. Make sure to review your financial aid status and UMail account on a regular basis for incomplete checklists.
Things to Keep in Mind
- Make sure the summer application is complete before submitting it. Failure to answer all questions may result in a delay of your funds.
- Please submit a loan request with the summer application if applying for a Stafford or Graduate/Parent PLUS loan.
- The Federal Pell Grant will be awarded based on projected enrollment and may be adjusted based on your enrollment as of the last day to add classes. Dropping or withdrawing classes could result in a bill owing.
- Summer application processing time varies. However, the average processing time is 2-4 weeks (processing times are 4-6 weeks as summer semester approaches). Please make sure to turn in your application early!
