External Scholarships

External scholarships are provided by organizations outside the University of Utah. The organization or donor selects the recipient and sends the funds to the University in behalf of the recipient.

All correspondence should include the following:

  • Student's Name
  • University of Utah ID
  •  The Donor’s or Organization’s Information:
    • Name, Scholarship Name, Scholarship Amount, Representative, Email, and Phone Number.
  • The Organization or Donor's Disbursement Instructions:
    • Indicate the semesters for which the funds are intended for.
    • Unless otherwise specified in writing from the organization or donor, the University will assume the scholarship funds represent the full payment of the scholarship and will be applied to the current semester as long as the student is enrolled in at least one credit hour.

Any correspondence or checks from donors or organizations will need to be mailed and accompanied with a cover letter. Please ensure checks are payable to the University.

  • Address:
    • University Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid 201 South 1460 East, Room 105 Salt Lake City UT 84112-9055

Additional Information and Instructions:

  • When a donor issues a check co-payable to a student and the University, the student must come to the University Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid to endorse the check before a credit can be applied to the student’s tuition bill.
    • This may cause unnecessary delays, so we encourage donors or organizations to make checks payable to the University, in the student’s behalf.

  • Scholarship checks made out to the University of Utah but mailed to the student must be delivered or forwarded, with a cover letter, to the University Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

  • The 1974 Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) requires that, before disclosing information, the University obtains a written release from enrolled students. Thus, the University Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid must have the student’s signed approval before releasing grades and financial information to private scholarship donors or organizations.
    •  Please contact the University Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid to sign a release of information.
    • Do note, when a student fails to meet established satisfactory academic progress (SAP), the University will notify the donor and discuss how the scholarship should be handled. The University will return scholarship funds to the donor or organization, upon request. Otherwise, we must have authorization from the donor before funds will be released.

Tuition Due Dates:

Funds provided by donors or organizations outside the University must arrive at least one month prior to the tuition due date for the respective semester for which the funds are intended for.

  • Funds arriving after that date will be process as quickly as possible, but students are responsible for paying all tuition and fee charges, including late fees, if processing does not occur in time.
  • Classes will not be held to facilitate late arrival of funds.
